Patchouli
Patchouli is one of the most polarizing notes in perfumery: deeply beloved by devotees and intensely disliked by others. The raw material is a dark, fermented essential oil extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant, native to Southeast Asia. Aged patchouli darkens and deepens into something rich, earthy, chocolatey, and almost wine-like.
Patchouli became the defining scent of 1960s counterculture. Modern perfumery has rehabilitated and refined it enormously: Angel by Thierry Mugler turned it into the cornerstone of the gourmand family; many contemporary niche releases use it as a transparent, almost floral material called cleanpatch.
Patchouli pairs brilliantly with rose, oud, tobacco, leather, vanilla, and mossy notes. If the depth of patchouli appeals to you, explore earthy, mossy, woody, and smoky accords for closely related character.
